Depressed girlDepression is a common, but serious mood disorder that can affect the way a person feels, thinks, and handles daily life. It affects 1 in every 15 adults each year, but can also affect children and adolescents. Depression is more than just sadness or grief. Symptoms of depression may include but are not limited to:

  • A persistent sad or “empty” mood
  • A feeling of hopelessness
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of guilt and worthlessness
  • Loss of interest and pleasure in previously enjoyed hobbies
  • Decreased energy or fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty with concentrating or decision-making
  • Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
  • Appetite and/or weight changes
  • Thoughts of death or suicide are also signs of depression that should be taken seriously

Risk factors of depression includes personal or family history of depression, major life changes, trauma, or stress, as well as certain physical illnesses and medications. Depression can be treated with psychotherapy, also known as “talk therapy” and medication. Depression can look different in everyone, so it is important to talk to a profession to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment.
